Pharma Operational Excellence Benchmarking

Benchmarking Operational Excellence in Pharmaceutical Production: Compare your performance and maturity level to industry peers, understand your enablers, and discover potential for improvement.

The consistent implementation of Operational Excellence (OPEX) principles has been proven to lead to significantly higher performance. Our benchmarking, based on over 20 years of research and the world's largest non-commercial OPEX pharmaceutical database, shows you where you stand and which factors enable top performance.

Participants receive:

  • A detailed performance assessment (KPIs & enablers)
  • Benchmarking against more than 430 pharmaceutical production sites worldwide
  • Identification of key areas for improvement
  • A personalized site report
  • Optional deep dive workshops

We evaluate your site along four key OPEX dimensions:

  • Just-in-time (JIT)
  • Total quality management (TQM)
  • Total productive maintenance (TPM)
  • Effective management system (EMS)

We also take structural factors, the site environment, technologies, and role profiles into account.

Background

Since 2004, we have been conducting the world's leading OPEX benchmarking in the pharmaceutical industry. This enables reliable comparisons and scientifically sound findings. Our database includes:

  • Over 430 production sites (API, F&P, biotech)
  • Over 160 companies in more than 40 countries
  • 18 of the 20 pharmaceutical companies with the highest sales worldwide

The project is fully financed by participating companies. This ensures independence from individual sponsors and guarantees high practical relevance.

Data Protection

The benchmarking project is conducted in accordance with the International Benchmarking Code of Conduct, which ensures that all participants behave in a fair and responsible manner. Company data is treated with the utmost confidentiality. Company-specific information may not be used without the prior consent of the company concerned. The institute reserves the right to use the project results in summarized and anonymized form for publication.
