Definitions

Logistics

Planning, design, controlling, realization and monitoring of the spatio-temporal transformation of goods, the associated information flow and the related transformations with regard to quantities and types of goods, goods handling characteristics and the logical determinacy of the goods with the aim of efficiently designing a flow of goods and waste from a delivery point to a receiving point. The delivery and receiving point can be within a company or between a company and its customer. (PSCM-HSG, based on Schulte (2013) and Large (2012)).

Logistics Management

Efficient and effective design, planning, implementing and control of forward and reverse flow and storage of goods, services and related information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customers‘ requirements. (PSCM-HSG, in Anlehnung an Lambert, Stock und Ellram (2006), Poist (1986), Chen & Paulraj (2004) und Cooper, Lambert und Pagh (1997)).

Logistics Systems

Logistic Systems are the structures and processes which serve to transfer objects in space and time. They include traditional logistics activities, such as warehousing, transport and inventory management. (PSCM-HSG, in Anlehnung an Poist (1986), Cooper, Lambert und Pagh (1997) und Chen & Paulraj (2004)).

Supply Chain

Supply chain includes the entire system with all participants from extraction of raw materials to end consumers. (Essig, Hofmann & Stölzle (2013)).

Supply Chain Management

Supply Chain Management is the cooperative coordination of company-wide material, information and finance-flows in company networks through establishment of integrative, cross-functional leadership and execution process in order to realize competitive advantages for the end customer and thus increase the efficiency of the entire network. (Essig, Hofmann & Stölzle (2013)).

Operations Management

All forms of planning, steering and control ("management") of resources that are used for the production and provision of products and services. It therefore includes the coordination of all activities involved in creating a product or service. (PSCM-HSG, based on Slack, Brandon-Jones & Johnston (2013)).

Procurement

Procurement is the supply of the economic goods, services and labor, financial resources, rights and information from the procurement submarkets required for the realization of the operational service creation and utilization processes. (PSCM-HSG, based on Hofmann, Maucher, Kotula & Kreienbrink (2012) and Large (2013)).

Logistics Philosophy

Logistics is no longer confined to its specific function within the company. Logistics marks an overall way of thinking (world view), that guides decisions in management & management approach. It includes materials- and information-flow-orientation as well as processes-orientation. (PSCM-HSG, in Anlehnung an Poist (1986) and Cooper, Lambert & Pagh (1997) und Chen & Paulraj (2004)).
